The Aiken County Coroner’s Office is investigating an early morning car accident that claimed the life of a passenger.

At 4:42 a.m. Saturday, the driver of a 2010 Kia sedan was traveling west on Interstate 20 at the seven mile marker in North Augusta when the vehicle hit a disabled vehicle from an earlier accident, according to an email from Darryl Ables, Aiken County coroner.

The Kia was then struck in the rear by a 2012 Dodge Charger.

The Kia’s front-seat passenger, along with the driver and another passenger, were taken to Augusta University Medical Center. The front-seat passenger was pronounced dead at 5:56 a.m.

“The victim’s name will be released after positive identification and
notification to next of kin. The coroner’s office along with Highway Patrol
are continuing with the investigation,” the email said.
