One dead in early morning shooting Sunday

The Richmond County Coroner’s Office is investigating a shooting death that occurred in downtown Augusta early Sunday morning.

Percy Luther Johnson, 31, of Fredericksburg, Va. was shot at least one time on the 700 block of Broad Street, according to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene at 2:02 p.m., according to an email from Sgt. Caleb Lee with the sheriff’s office. Johnson was taken to Augusta University Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 2:43 a.m.

An autopsy has been scheduled. The shooting is still under investigation.
