The Aiken County Animal Shelter is holding a “Clear the Shelter Day” on Saturday, Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon. With the help of the shelter’s volunteer group, Friends of the Animal Shelter, all dog and cat adoption fees have been sponsored so there is no charge to save a homeless pet.
FOTAS President Jennifer Miller said the shelter is at full capacity.

“Our intake numbers keep rising, while adoption numbers are on the decline,” she said. “We need the community’s help, so please consider giving a shelter pet a loving home this Saturday.”
In July, the shelter took in 450 homeless animals and received 155 more so far in August. Dogs that have been at the shelter the longest, like Remmie, a young brindle mixed breed, are getting depressed. Some are overlooked because of physical imperfections like two-year-old Caboose, a mixed breed whose owner did not take care of an eye injury and the eye had to be removed. Halo, a three-month-old kitten was brought in as a stray. An upper respiratory infection caused the removal of both eyes but she will get around fine once she memorizes her new home. She will need to be an indoor-only cat.

The resurgence of COVID-19 has fewer people visiting the shelter. Because of the virus, this event will be held mostly outdoors. Social distancing will be observed, and animals will be brought out to potential adopters to meet. The shelter is at 333 Wire Rd.
