A revived city partnership is hoped to address storm damage along the busy Wheeler Road gateway ahead of Masters Week.
For more than a decade, “one of Augusta’s greatest community stakeholders” through a Community Foundation fund has maintained five of the city’s most significant gateways, Mayor Garnett Johnson said last week.
It’s “a great partnership that we certainly need to continue,” he said.
Now, Barry Storey wants to replace the numerous trees lining the median that fell during Hurricane Helene, Johnson said.
“He’s proposing to replace those trees if the city is willing to pay for 50% of the trees,” Johnson said. The proposal also includes repairing landscaping, he said.
The project will cost the city $33,460 and is expected complete by the Masters Tournament, the mayor said.
Commissioner Jordan Johnson motioned in committee to approve the agreement if questions about whether it was an in-kind or cash transfer were answered. The item goes before the full commission Tuesday for approval.
Other items going before the commission Tuesday include:
- Mayor Johnson has asked to declare and announce the appointees made by the mayor and commission to serve on the Augusta-Richmond County Charter Review Committee
- To develop a plan within 30 days to make sections of Reynolds and Ellis streets one-way and add timed parking to Broad Street
- Commissioner Alvin Mason has requested an update on storm debris pickup from Infrastructure Systems Management
- Discussion requested by Commissioner Catherine Rice of cleaning up city medians, telephone poles and rights-of-way
- Rice has requested an update on the Augusta Recreation and Parks audit
- Scheduling a workshop to “update and revamp” Augusta’s Historic Preservation Commission ordinance, requested by Rice
