Partnership to address Wheeler gateway

A revived city partnership is hoped to address storm damage along the busy Wheeler Road gateway ahead of Masters Week.

For more than a decade, “one of Augusta’s greatest community stakeholders” through a Community Foundation fund has maintained five of the city’s most significant gateways, Mayor Garnett Johnson said last week.

It’s “a great partnership that we certainly need to continue,” he said.

Now, Barry Storey wants to replace the numerous trees lining the median that fell during Hurricane Helene, Johnson said.

“He’s proposing to replace those trees if the city is willing to pay for 50% of the trees,” Johnson said. The proposal also includes repairing landscaping, he said.

The project will cost the city $33,460 and is expected complete by the Masters Tournament, the mayor said.

Commissioner Jordan Johnson motioned in committee to approve the agreement if questions about whether it was an in-kind or cash transfer were answered. The item goes before the full commission Tuesday for approval.
