A Greenbrier High School student has been charged after an Oct. 1 incident involving pepper spray at the homecoming dance.
The unnamed student has been charged with reckless conduct and disruption of public school, according to a news release.
Steven Flynt, the school district superintendent, said the investigation concluded late Friday, Oct. 7.
“We only had a couple of kids that told us they had any reaction. We didn’t even know what it was. They were sneezing and coughing. We checked them out and released them. There weren’t that many,” said Flynt about the night of the incident.
A Columbia County School District incident report said that “a substance later revealed as pepper spray was sprayed an unknown amount of times on or near the dance floor.”
Gold Cross was dispatched to the scene.
“Emergency medical crews were called to the school out of an abundance of caution and the students were evaluated and cleared before being released to their parents. Five additional students were evaluated, upon request, and cleared by medical crews,” the news release said.
Flynt also refuted rumors that there was marijuana use during the dance that night.
“We didn’t have any reports of that,” he said.
The dance went on for the rest of the evening “with no further incidents,” the press release said.
