About 1,000 athletes were expected to hit the road Saturday as part of the Augusta Sports Council’s Augusta Half Marathon, 10K and 5K races.
The event is a fundraiser for the organization’s G.A.M.E.S. Scholarship Fund.
A special portion of the event is the “Blue Mile.”
Volunteers along this stretch wear blue and hold an American flag while standing near the photograph of a fallen service member.
The council had hoped for “hundreds of volunteers” to be on the course between 6:30 and 11 a.m. “to ensure that these men and women are not forgotten,” according to an email from the sports council.
