Photojournalism: Autumn on Fort Gordon

Date: November 28, 2021

Growing up in a military family, I’ve spent a fair amount of time on Fort Gordon. It’s where I learned how to drive, how to swim, and where I met several of my good friends. I took a drive around base to capture the fall colors in some of my favorite spots before the trees go bare for the winter.

Indoor Pool

Located on Barnes Avenue, this pool is where I formally learned how not to just survive in the water but actually swim. I gained my lifeguarding certification here after a friend of mine put me through a crash course on formal stroke mechanics. Since then, I’ve taught several children and adults how to swim and have even certified some as lifeguards.

Woodworth Library

As a kid, I spent most of my time with my nose in a book. My parents helped enable this habit by taking me to several libraries around the CSRA, including this one. Woodworth Library is situated on Rice Road.

Dog Park

Sitting on 39th Street, this dog park is one of my favorite places to take dogs to socialize. It’s split down the middle with one side for bigger dogs and the other for smaller ones. This division is for pet and owner safety.

Basketball Court

Within walking distance of the outdoor pool on Brainard Avenue, this basketball court was a go-to for a few of the lifeguards when the shift was over or during a lunch break.

Disc Golf

Home of the 2017 PDGA Pro Disc Golf World Championships, Fort Gordon has disc golf courses open for anyone with access to the installation to use. There are different courses with long and short variations, all free of charge. More information about the courses can be found at this link.
