One Saturday a month volunteers gather for blanket making day in community events rooms at Platt’s Funeral Home.
There they sew, crochet, knit and use their needle skills to make blankets for children in the area. But according to coordinator Christine Newby, people don’t have to be skilled in sewing to volunteer for the organization.
There are other ways to help.

When Newby began with the organization in 2017, a total of about 500 blankets were distributed. As of Oct. 10, 5,294 blankets have been delivered to children through partner organizations such as Christ Community Health, iCare, Piedmont and Doctors Hospitals neonatal intensive care units, Ronald McDonald House, Safe Homes and Good Neighbor Ministries. Local fire departments and Departments of Family and Children Services also take blankets to give to children.
Children up to age 18 who live in Richmond, Columbia, Burke, Jefferson, Lincoln and Burke counties benefit from the program.

Volunteers are appreciated as are donations, according to Newby.
A donation of $700 can help make 100 blankets or $350 can be used to make 50 blankets. For more information, email cnewby2211@hotmail.com or call (706) 714-0224.
