Photojournalism: Reed Creek Park

Date: August 29, 2021

I took some time to check out Reed Creek Nature Park located at 3802 Park Lane in Martinez. Similarly to Phinizy Swamp, Reed Creek is another park that’s intended to exhibit the importance of wetland environments.

It’s smaller than Phinizy but has some beautiful pockets along its loop. The park offers a boardwalk and trails for visitors to explore, as well as a pollinator garden and a CSRA Master Gardener’s Demonstration Garden next to the Interpretive Center. The Interpretive Center has “Ambassador Animals” on exhibit when open, as well as books and other interactive activities for anyone interested in learning more about the wetland ecosystem.

Boardwalk

This portion of the boardwalk leads to the “Blue Trail,” which was Tori Sutton’s Gold Award Project for Girl Scout Troop 20309.

Pocket

Off to the side of the trails are a few really interesting areas, like this small area with tree branches tangling into a sort of roof overhead.

CSRA Master Gardener’s Demonstration Garden

The garden sits near the interpretive center, and has information regarding the flora located on boards nearby.

Pollinator Garden

Purple phlox growing in the butterfly-shaped pollinator garden next to the Demo Garden. If you’re patient enough, you can see various pollinating insects and check them off of an observation sheet found nearby.
