Competitors were met with a sunny fall morning on the opening day of the 31st Augusta Classic. Hosted by Augusta’s Disc Golf Association, rounds took place between Riverview, Lake Olmstead and Pendleton King Park.

The competition includes 125 players and will start with their 80+ division Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. at Lake Olmstead Park.

Four players will be competing in the 80+ category and will include local legend Pete May, who designed the course many years ago at Lake Olmstead.

“I think the coolest story of the week is our group of professional 80-year-old competitors,” said Jeremy Hughes, president of Augusta’s Disc Golf Association.

Hughes said disc golf is a sport that brings people from all walks of life together.

“The thing is – folks will be playing out here and just meet each other. You can have a doctor, lawyer, a banker – just people you’d never think would be playing together,” said Hughes.

The tournament will also feature food trucks and winners will be announced at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday evening, Sept. 25, at Lake Olmstead Park.
