The first jewel of Aiken’s Triple Crown was held Saturday March 19, at the Aiken Training Track with the 79th running of the Aiken Trials.

The 2020 trials were held just as events began to be cancelled during the start of the pandemic, but last year’s running was cancelled.

Women wore their fancy hats, people tailgated and horses and ponies ran.

The Aiken Trials, started in 1942, is a series of races designed to train younger horses in the experience of racing. Five of the six races are for horses younger than two years old that have never won a race. The sixth race is for older horses that may have already won a race, according to the Aiken Training Track website.

Races were held throughout the day with fun events in between.

The next jewel is the Aiken Steeplechase scheduled for March 26 at the Aiken Steeplechase Racecourse. Events begin at 8 a.m. Tickets are available at aikensteeplechase.com
