NORTH AUGUSTA – Plans are progressing to turn a former skating rink and carpet store into a mixed-use development.

“We hope to have the renovation done on the existing building by May 1st of 2023. Other builds (will) follow based on tenant demand. Interest in space in the buildings has been robust,” said Brett Brannon, president of Palmetto Peach Development, LLC, which purchased the property in March.

The historic building housed the city’s original skating rink. Located across from the North Augusta Municipal Building, the two-story 6,000 square foot building at 210 Georgia Ave. is in the Gateway Portal to downtown North Augusta from the 13th Street Bridge.

North Augusta Forward announced in March it was “continuing its mission to partner with the community to make North Augusta a better place to live, work and play by finalizing the sale of the historic building.”

Brannon said this week his company is redeveloping the space and is still in the planning and permitting stage. The future facility’s full uses have yet to be determined.

“We may or may not do a residential component; that hasn’t been determined yet,” Brannon said this week.

The property had previously been owned by North Augusta Forward and its officials had wanted to attract a buyer interested in the vision for the area.

“This mixed-use development, coupled with NA Forward’s vision to bring the Greeneway into downtown, via the Downtown Greeneway Connector, will play an integral part of the overall plan for downtown revitalization,” said Avery Spears-Mahoney, North Augusta Forward’s executive director, at  a March press conference.

“It is rewarding to be a part of saving this historic building and complementing it with thoughtful new development designed to reflect both our past and our future,” she said in March.

According to a release from North Augusta Forward, the organization’s goal for more than 20 years has been to transform North Augusta.

“From our founding in 1999 as North Augusta 2000, the goal has always been to partner with residents, businesses, governments and community organizations to identify, develop and implement visionary initiatives as a catalyst for the continued transformation of North Augusta into an inviting and vibrant community that residents want to call home. This acquisition is another step forward in accomplishing that goal,” the release said.
