Police chase ends with fatal accident

An Aiken man is dead after his vehicle was struck by another driver attempting to elude sheriff’s deputies.

Brian Heath, 28, of Aiken was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m. Friday, according to an email from Coroner Mark Bowen.

“Heath was driving his vehicle on Old Savannah Road when his vehicle was struck by a vehicle involved in a pursuit with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, ” the email said. “Heath had to be extricated from the vehicle.”

Richmond County deputies were on the scene of an accident with injuries Friday night after a chase.

According to an email from Sgt. William McCarty with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, “one of the vehicles was involved in a pursuit with deputies prior to the crash” which occurred on Old Savannah Road near Roselle Street.

One of the drivers had to be extricated from the vehicle while the other driver was transported to the hospital.

“At the request of the Sheriff’s Office. The Georgia State Patrol has responded to the scene and the investigation will be turned over to them,” the email said.

No further information has been released.
