A bizarre situation that occurred at Cabela’s Outpost and Bass Pro Shops evolved into a police chase that went through Columbia County and all the way to Clarks Hill before the suspect was apprehended in Wildwood Park at the lake.

Officials say that Milton Carnell Walker III, 28 years-old, of Lincolnton, attempted to purchase a handgun at Cabela’s, located at The Village in Riverwatch Retail Center around 4 p.m. on Aug. 19.

Employees of the store noticed the man acting strangely and refused to sell him a weapon. He left the store, but then returned minutes later wearing a helmet and body armor, prompting a call to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers pursued Walker as he fled into Columbia County, and the chase was joined by the Georgia State Patrol.

According to Columbia County Major Steve Morris, the suspect was “pitted” at Wildwood Park, meaning troopers used their vehicles to pen the suspect’s vehicle in and were able to make an arrest.

No one was injured in the incident.

Walker was taken to the McDuffie County hospital for a mental evaluation before being booked into the Columbia County Detention Center on charges of fleeing, obstructing a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor DUI.
