Police standoff happening in Aiken County; school lockdown lifted

The Aiken County School District issued updates on lockdowns involving several schools.

  • Aiken High School was placed on a soft lockdown earlier today following a bomb threat (called in). Law enforcement cleared the building and the school was not evacuated.
  • Byrd Elementary School, Leavelle McCampbell Middle School and Graniteville Elementary School were placed on a hard lockdown earlier today due to a standoff in the nearby Sage Creek neighborhood. The hard lockdown was later lifted and schools went to a soft lockdown posture to facilitate dismissal.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s SWAT team is on the scene of a police standoff in the Sage Creek subdivision in Graniteville.

Police were called around noon on reports of an assault.

According to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was released and is safe, but the subject is barricaded in a home, and it is believed the person is armed.

Three area schools as well as the immediate area in the subdivision are on hard lockdown.
