Popeyes gets fried in health inspection

The health inspection world grades a score below 70 as failing, however, no restaurants, pools or hotels received a failing score from inspections on June 30–July 4.

Worst scores in this week’s health inspection

This week’s lowest health inspection score was a 78 earned by a Popeyes, located at 3450 Wrightsboro Road, Space 2360, in Augusta.

During the inspection, the inspector noted employees prepping food without washing hands, which resulted in a nine-point deduction.

“Observed employees entering the establishment and start prepping food prior to hand washing,” the report stated. 

The inspector also reported witnessing unclean kitchen equipment, resulting in another four-point reduction.

“Observed black buildup inside the bulk ice machine,” the report stated. “Clean the ice machine. Increase cleaning frequency to limit buildup.”

The inspector also deducted three points from the health score for noticing an employee not wearing proper gear for food prepping.

“Observed an employee actively prepping food w/out wearing a beard or hair restraint,” the report stated. “Employees must wear hair/beard restraint during active food prep.”

The inspector also deducted three points for seeing an employee wearing accessories during food preparation.

“Observed an employee wearing bracelets during active food prep,” the report stated. “Only a plain band ring can be worn during active food prep.”

The second lowest score of the week was an 82 given to First Watch, located at 630 Crane Creek Drive, Suite 405, in Augusta.

The inspector deducted a total of five points for noticing colorful buildup on kitchen equipment.

“Observed pink buildup inside the bulk ice machine in main kitchen. Clean ice machine.,” the report stated. “Observed buildup on sides & back sides of cooking equipment & ice machine. Clean all equipment and/or have serviced.”

During the inspection, the inspector deducted another four points for finding expired food.

“Observed carrots (6/29/25), veggies (6/25/25), & bloody mix (6/26/25) stored past date marks,” the report stated. “Monitor date markings and ensure food items are properly discarded.”

For noticing the previous health score not posted, the establishment lost another point.

“Observed the most recent health inspection not posted. Signage (permit & inspection) is also not posted w/in customer view,” the report stated.

The establishment also lost another point for not properly labeling food.

“Observed ham, cheese, chia seeds, & spring salad mix not properly date marked,” the report stated.

Following the First Watch inspection, the third lowest score of the week was another 82 given to Roma’s Pizza, located at 1133 Agerton Lane, in Augusta.

The inspector deducted a total of five points for noticing unclean equipment in the kitchen.

“Observed black buildup inside the ice shoot. Clean ice shoot. Increase cleaning frequency to limit buildup,” the report stated. “Observed food buildup on sides & back sides of cooking equipment.Clean all equipment. Increase cleaning frequency to limit buildup.”

During the inspection, the inspector deducted three more points for noticing a lack of proper labeling on containers.

“Observed multiple containers of food outside of original container [without] labels,” the report stated.

After observing an employee not wearing correct gear during food prepping, the establishment’s health inspection score lost another three points.

“Observed an employee [without] hair or beard restraint during active food prep,” the report stated.

For observing insect activity in the restaurant, the inspector deducted three more points.

“Observed gnats & flies throughout the establishment,” the report stated. “Consult [with] a licensed pest control operator to get rid of current presence.”

The establishment lost another point for having buildup on vents.

“Observed buildup on vent/hood,” the report stated. “Clean and/or have serviced.”
