A new, private club called The 1790 Club is coming to Evans.

Susan Johnson, the CEO of the club, declined to do an interview about the club citing the private nature of it, but she did provide a statement.

“The 1790 Club is an exclusive, members only social/dining club,” Johnson said in a statement. “With strong bylaws, our venue will be free from personal agendas with members that hold the upmost respect for each other and the club. While we do not disclose our membership, invitations were extended to principled people encompassing all races, ages, and of varied socio-economic status and professional backgrounds. The main purpose of our club is to be a gathering place for those dedicated to promoting and fostering the prosperity of our community.”

The 1790 Club is a 501(c)(7), which is normal for many country clubs and private dinner clubs, she said. According to the IRS website, social clubs can be exempt from federal income tax if they meet the requirements of section 501(c)(7) of the Internal Revenue Code.

“Although they are generally exempt from tax, social clubs are subject to tax on their unrelated business income, which includes income from nonmembers,” the website states. “In addition to being taxed on unrelated income, a social club may lose its exempt status if it receives too much unrelated income.”

The club is named after the year Columbia County was founded, which was 1790. It will be located on the 4th floor of the Meybohm Building, she said. No other information is available about The 1790 Club.
