An upcoming golf tournament at Fort Gordon will benefit a local organization.
The Commonwealth St. Patrick’s Day Golf Outing on March 16 at Gordon Lakes Golf Club is annual tournament that benefits a local charity, said Jamie Roberts, commonwealth forces member. The reason for this is because they would like to give something back to the community.
This year, the beneficiary is Project Lifting Spirits. Roberts said he came across the organization on Facebook, and they were looking for someone to host a golf tournament, so it all worked out.
Project Lifting Spirits was started in 2007 to give deployed military members care packages, said Stacey Blevins, who works with the organization.
“It started with my mom and I,” Blevins said. “It has evolved into helping both Fisher Houses in the area, uptown and downtown VA facilities…and we do some work with Eisenhower Hospital on post. We provide hygiene items. We do more kind of uplifting stuff. We do food, we help with gifts, we make sure they have the necessities. We try to interact with them and let them know somebody cares.”
Blevins said it’s nice to be receiving the funds from the upcoming golf tournament.
“That is a very big plus for us,” Blevins said. “Project Lifting Spirits is completely 100% volunteer and donation based. Nobody gets paid. This is all done because we want to do it.”
The money will be used to help the different entities and ensure there are hygiene products, clothes and food as the need arises.
The tournament has been held in the spring and fall. Roberts said last spring the tournament raised $5,000, and the fall tournament raised $3,000.
“We’re aiming to do $5,000, but I think we’ll do more than that,” Roberts said.
