A local company is planning to build a nursery in Evans.

Sunrise Bird Holding LLC has applied to rezone its 11-acre parcel along Hereford Farm Road, across from the Brandywine and Millshaven subdivisions, from Single-family Residential to S-1 Special district.

Sunrise aims to develop a nursery specializing in plants native to local ecosystems. The enterprise will use an existing house for a business office and build a metal garage on the property to store equipment and vehicles. It also plans to both build a greenhouse and fence off an outdoor growing area.

The operation would be in the center of the property, surrounded by woods, making it mostly invisible to its residential neighbors.

The accompanying narrative states the nursery would only be open to the public up to four times a month for plant sales and ecological education programs, no earlier than 9 a.m. and no later than 7 p.m. Otherwise, the business will sell its plants at local farmers markets.

According to the same document, if approved, construction of the additions to the property for the nursery should be completed by August of this year.

A proposed cabinetry business is the subject of a variance request at 3475 River Watch Parkway, the location of River Watch Business Park. Brandon Thompson is seeking permission to use a space in the office building for the “light industrial use” of building and painting cabinets. The shop would be open from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursdays, and have six employees, according to the narrative.

Thompson cites the fact that the building on the property also houses other industrial buildings such as LL Flooring and Robbie’s Automotive Service Center.

The Columbia County Planning Commission is scheduled to consider both the rezoning request for Hereford Farm Road and the variance petition for River Watch Business Park during its April 18 meeting.
