The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has confirmed a fox removed from Hammond Hills on Wednesday has tested positive for rabies.
Resident Allie Bentley posted a warning to her Facebook page that a fox attacked her dog in her backyard. The fox bit her dog’s tail.

The attack happened between Crestview Avenue and Lake Avenue.
Lieutenant Luke Sherman with North Augusta Public Safety said officers were called to the scene. They were able to corner the fox and euthanize it with a shotgun.
The fox was sent to DHEC’S lab for testing on July 28 and confirmed to have rabies the next day.

In her Facebook post, Bentley said her dog is up to date on its rabies vaccination. However, because of the South Carolina Rabies Control Act, DHEC said the dog will still have to be quarantined for 45 days.
