Augusta Animal Services is extending its “Home for the Holiday” program that gives people the opportunity to give a dog or cat a fun Thanksgiving weekend and foster a potential pet.

Families considering adopting a pet in the near future might want to take a trial run to see if pet ownership is a responsibility they are prepared for, and a little rascal named Raffle is offering his services to show a family the ropes.

According to Augusta Animal Services, Raffle is offering his services free of charge and will even bring along his own treats.

Raffle is nine months old and full of energy. He loves his ball and gets excited when he gets his leash attached to his collar, knowing he is either going on a walk or a car ride where he can wag his tongue in the wind.

Actually, Raffle is but one of 11 dogs and nine cats that Augusta Animal Services has available for fostering as part of the “Home for the Holiday” annual program.

The animals stay in the care of the prospective adoptive parent for the weekend and can be brought back to the animal shelter after the weekend and dropped back off on the Monday after Thanksgiving.

However, according to Animal Services Deputy Director of Crystal Eskola, most of the animals that are fostered for a weekend end up remaining a part of the family.

“I would say that over 80% of the foster animals we send out through the ‘Home for the Holiday’ event stay on as permanent adoptions and we love that,” Eskola said.

The weekend fostering program has been extended to today, Nov. 22, and the program will go on from 10 am to 2 pm.
