Routine maintenance unrelated to last week’s CSX derailment on Laney-Walker Boulevard closed a handful of downtown railroad crossings Monday, including on Walton Way.
City traffic engineer John Ussery said the rail crossing work tends to happen without much warning.
“They’re kind of all over the place. They come in and have crews that come and do several crossings,” he said.

Last week nine CSX cars loaded with malt beverage derailed near the CSX yard off Laney-Walker. Damage to the road and tracks was expected to create delays for several days.
The Walton Way and Greene Street crossings downtown are owned by Norfolk Southern.
Earlier this month the city announced crossings at eight roads were being rebuilt, and that motorists should expect delays.
Those were crossings at Dan Bowles, Lumpkin, Molly Pond, Nixon, Norton, Old Louisville, Tobacco and Windsor Springs roads.
Work was expected to be complete by the end of the month.
The work is in addition to ongoing Transportation Investment Act sales tax construction ongoing on multiple downtown streets, including 13th and Greene streets, as well as additional work on James Brown Boulevard.
