On November 11, 2023, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office was awarded national accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) in the Law Enforcement Accreditation Program.

According to a RCSO press release, the agency was first accredited in 2015 and has maintained compliance during CALEA’s four-year accreditation cycle that consisted of four annual remote web-based file reviews and a site-based assessment in the fourth year. RCSO staff attended the CALEA Fall Conference in Bellevue, Washington, where they presented information to the CALEA commission on topics of community involvement, continuous training of the employees, and strategic planning.

After deliberation, the commission unanimously voted for re-accreditation. This is the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office’s 3rd award of national accreditation.

Earlier this year, the sheriff’s office received re-accreditation from the American Correctional Association (ACA) and National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) for the Charles B. Webster Detention Center, maintaining the agency’s “Triple Crown” status previously awarded in 2017, the release says.

“Despite the ongoing challenges, Sheriff (Richard) Roundtree and his staff believes in the adherence to best practices in the profession of law enforcement and will continue to strive to be the premier agency in the state of Georgia by voluntarily meeting professional standards developed by the commission to strengthen accountability within the agency and the community,” the release says.
