A Richmond County Deputy was in surgery after being shot in the face during an overnight call.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Caleb Lee, officers responded at 1:41 a.m. Thursday to the 2200 block of Bungalow Road in reference to a disturbance call.

“While on scene, the male subject began shooting at deputies striking one deputy who was taken to the hospital for treatment,” Sgt. Lee said. “The subject barricaded himself and SWAT was called to the scene as well as the GBI.”

The subject ultimately surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident. He was reportedly wanted on a warrant for burglary and had to be gassed out of the house.

Deputy Michael Cole was rushed to the hospital by another deputy, and he is expected to survive the shooting, according to sources.

The suspect’s name was not immediately released, and the sheriff’s office declined to release the officer’s photo.
