A Richmond County deputy has been disciplined for sleeping with a woman on duty after meeting her on a call.
Deputy Joshua Williams’ mistake was leaving part of his uniform in the woman’s hotel room after having sex with her on Oct. 20, 2022, according to a disciplinary file. He left two “belt keepers” in a room at Super 8 Motel on Washington Road.
Deputy Williams was called to the Super 8 for a woman wanting to file a report about harassing phone calls. He met with the woman for 23 minutes and then turned off his body-worn camera. But a hotel surveillance video shows him exiting his patrol car and walking back to the room, where he stayed for 10 minutes.
Confronted about the incident, Deputy Williams said he “left the belt keepers by mistake in the room after having sexual intercourse with the complainant on the call,” an internal affairs (IA) document says.
In addition, a Super 8 employee told him about a hotel guest who had left a gun magazine in their room, and it contained six rounds. Instead of turning it over to the sheriff’s office and reporting it, he simply took the gun magazine home.
The officer was in violation of three policies, including conduct unbecoming, audio and video recording and property recovered, the IA report says.
The officer got a 10-day suspension and a year probation for the sex act as well as a one-day suspension for turning off his body worn camera during the call and another day for leaving part of his uniform there.
Deputy Williams had been disciplined four times before the 2022 incident, including twice for sleeping on duty in 2021 and causing an accident in April 2022. He previously served a total of seven days of suspension.
