RCSO investigator resigns after accusations of domestic violence

Investigator Johnathan Mathis

Date: May 01, 2023

An eight-year veteran officer with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has resigned amid allegations of domestic violence against his wife, authorities said Monday.

Investigator Johnathan Mathis turned himself in Monday on a charge of simple battery – family violence. The sheriff’s office gave few details on the incident, saying he was “involved in a domestic dispute with his wife at their residence” last Wednesday.

“This incident will follow the same course as any other criminal investigation, and no other information will be provided at this time,” a press release says.

The arrests are part of a mounting list of Richmond County officers who end up on the other side of the bars for alleged criminal behavior.

Mathis began his employment with the sheriff’s office in 2015 and resigned Friday amid the investigation. He had been promoted to investigator in November.

Johnathan Mathis, left, was promoted to investigator in November 2022. He is pictured here with Sheriff Richard Roundtree to recognize the promotion.
