The husband of the Richmond County solicitor general has submitted a recall application against Sheriff Richard Roundtree.

Eric Loggins, the spouse of Solicitor Omeeka Loggins, filed the application Thursday with Richmond County Board of Elections.

Elections Director Travis Doss said the elections board will vote on the application’s legal sufficiency at a Sept. 20 called meeting.

The application needs 100 sponsors, who were registered voters at the time Roundtree was last elected in 2020, to move forward, Doss said.

If approved, the petition needs signatures from 30% of registered voters – approximately 42,000 – to effect a recall, Doss said.

In the application, Eric Loggins said Roundtree “failed to protect the innocent and uphold the law” when a deputy failed to charge an individual after “crimes have been committed and witnesses are present.”

Loggins told media at the time he took issue with the sheriff’s handling of a wreck that took place in his driveway.

Solicitor Omeeka Loggins, whose car was struck in the incident, said she “supports my husband 100%” and was troubled by how it was handled, but declined to comment further.

Her office prosecutes misdemeanor offenses such as traffic crimes.

In the Aug. 27 incident, driver Connie Burnett ran off the road and crashed into Loggins’ vehicle at their home on Wheeler Road, according to an incident report.

Burnett was determined to be at fault for failing to stay in her lane, but charged with nothing more, it said.

Burnett has multiple convictions for moving violations and a May 2023 conviction in Richmond County Superior Court for driving under the influence and possession of methamphetamines.

Roundtree, who faces a challenge from Eugene Brantley for reelection next year, did not return a message seeking comment.
