Augusta Utilities is urging residents to avoid using the Augusta Canal towpath due to storm damage.

“The impact of Hurricane Helene has caused major damage, including numerous trees down and several tree limbs to break, creating hazardous conditions with limbs hanging dangerously overhead,” the department said in a statement.

The towpath, used by many for recreation, runs alongside the canal from Savannah Rapids Park south. Many Columbia County residents use the towpath trail starting at the park, although the section is owned and maintained by Augusta.

The portion deemed unsafe and undergoing repairs runs about 3.6 miles from Savannah Rapids Park south to the raw water pumping station, according to the statement.

During the repair process, “it is critical to remain off the towpath,” it said. “Unauthorized access to the towpath during this time not only places individuals at risk but also delays the work of crews and contractors tasked with making the area safe again.”

Residents may continue to use the towpath ––trail between the pumping station and the Lake Olmstead trailhead, or between Lake Olmstead and downtown, the statement said.

There is no timeline for the repairs. If you notice additional hazards near the towpath, report them to 706-842-3060.
