Earlier this month, Richmond County School System (RCSS) Superintendent, Dr. Kenneth Bradshaw, has announced his resignation, citing a desire to relocate closer to his family in Atlanta.

The school district, under Bradshaw’s leadership for the past five and a half years, is preparing for a transitional period with interim superintendent Dr. Malinda Cobb at the helm until at least the end of the spring 2025 semester.

In a gathering on Tuesday night, Dr. Bradshaw along with four other board members said their goodbyes to the district. Other board members stepping down from their roles include Patsy Scott representing District 5, Jimmy Atkins representing District 8, Helen Minchew representing District 10 and Dr. Wayne Frazier representing District 4.

Over half a decade’s legacy

At Tuesday’s gathering, Dr. Bradshaw reflected on his time as superintendent, emphasizing the progress made within the district during his tenure, such as the school district reaching its highest ever graduation rate and the implementation of a facilities master plan earlier this year

“This entire community came together and believed in me as a leader, and I’m forever grateful,” said Bradshaw

Current Board of Education President Charlie Walker lauded Bradshaw’s “go-getter” attitude, which he hopes to see in a future permanent superintendent.

“[I have] nothing but admiration for him, and wish him nothing but the best of what life will bring him when he goes home to his family,” said Walker.

What’s next for Richmond County

Regarding the search for a new superintendent, Walker stated that there is no definitive timeline for a permanent replacement; the board intends to rely on Dr. Malinda Cobb’s expertise as interim superintendent during this transitional phase.

Walker mentioned that it would not be surprising if Dr. Cobb applied for the full-time position.

“She knows the direction that the school system has been pointed in…she understands the layout, what the landscape looks like, what the plans are,” he said.

Dr. Bradshaw’s last day with the district will be Dec. 31.
