Richmond County Deputies are investigating a suspicious death that occurred Saturday.

At 11:12 a.m. Aug. 6, deputies responded to the Augusta Canal behind the Salvation Army Kroc Center on the 1800 block of Broad Street in reference to a dead person, according to an email from Sgt. William McCarty with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon arrival, the deputies found a body in the canal.

The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and Crime Scene Unit have responded to the scene and are in the early stages of the investigation, the email continued.

“At this time, the incident is being investigated as a suspicious death,” the email said. “There is no further information available at this time.”

Coroner Mark Bowen said the body of a man had been in the canal for several days and will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Lab for an autopsy and positive identification.
