Richmond County criminals have been warned, and deputies spent the weekend cracking down.

After a rash of violence over the past several weeks, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office released a statement last week promising to redouble efforts to proactively battle crime in the Garden City and over the weekend managed to make several arrests.

According to a press release, gang and narcotics investigators specifically targeted areas that have been prone to violence by using search warrants and conducting spot road checks. Search warrants were obtained for eight locations in the proactive effort.

As a result, 21 people were arrested and 20 illegally obtained guns were seized along with 51 pounds of marijuana, 42 grams of cocaine and scores of opiate pills including oxycontin, hydrocodone and alprazolam.

A 2006 Mercedes R500 and $14,306 in cash were also seized over the weekend.

According to Sheriff Richard Roundtree, the activity over the weekend is just the beginning of his office proactively targeting certain areas.

“This activity will continue until these gang members and their associates realize that the Sheriff’s Office will not rest until they stop or are put in jail,” Roundtree said in a news release.
