For Karena Williams and her niece Makayla Robinson, the Richmond County School System’s job and resource fair on March 10 was the perfect cross functional event to get Robinson started thinking about her future.

Robinson, a Hephzibah High School senior, said that she isn’t yet sure what direction she wants to take after graduation, but is enthusiastic about the possibilities after talking to a Helms College counselor at the function.

“I’m just hoping to get a good career that’s stable for me,” she said. “It’s a good opportunity,” she added about the event.

Job opportunities and resources for all

Job opportunities were available for parents and students, along with other resources geared toward families.

The school district’s Success Center is the mastermind behind the fair, which included booths from Medical Associates Plus, Christ Community, Still Waters Professional Counseling, SRP Federal Credit Union and The Family Y, among others.

Success Center Program Administrator Kim Mungo said that the center’s purpose is to support families in transition or who are in need of assistance, from paying the rent to finding quality medical assistance to receiving food and clothing.

“Part of our mission at the success center and our vision is to make sure that we remove those barriers for kids so they can be academically successful, even if their home life is not what it could be,” Mungo said. “But [it’s] also to provide our families with resources so they can become self-sufficient.”

Among parents who perused the booths in the Laney C. Walker gymnasium with their children were also graduate students and other adults seeking out opportunity.

Kayla Curry, a grad student looking to land an internship, shared that this fair seemed to have something for everybody.

“I found not only job opportunities, but also, like, some cool nonprofits and some good things and good resources from the community,” she said.
