Following Hurricane Helene hitting the CSRA early Friday morning, Richmond County School System announced schools would be closed on Monday, Sept. 30 and Tuesday, Oct. 1.

“We are hoping and praying that our families and students are safe and sound today,” said Dr. Kenneth Bradshaw, superintendent of schools for the Richmond County School System in a statement. “Our community was hard-hit by this storm; reports of loss of life, damaged homes and property, and critical infrastructure loss are coming from all corners of the CSRA. Due to the State of Emergency currently in effect, we have not fully assessed all our schools for damage. However, many buildings are experiencing power outages. Given the circumstances, we ask that our families and staff focus on their families and not worry about assignments until they return to school.”

RCSS provided the following updates:

  • All schools and offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 30, and Tuesday, Oct. 1. Outside of essential staff, employees will not report to work.
  • All athletic and extracurricular events on Friday, Sept. 27, through Tuesday, Oct. 1, have been canceled, including weekend events.

“We understand that many of our families and staff have been personally affected by the devastation of this storm. We encourage all of you to extend a helping hand to your neighbors in need and reach out for help as well. Thank you for your resilience, and please stay safe this weekend,” said the school system.

Another announcement will be made on Tuesday, Oct. 1 for the rest of the week.
