The Richmond County School System (RCSS) has seen a significant improvement in its 2024 ACT composite score, rising from 18.1 in 2023 to 19.5 at a 3% gain across high schools.
More than 160 students took the test in the 2024 cohort and achieved the second-highest ACT composite score in the school system’s history, according to a press release from the RCSS.
“We are proud of our students and teachers who have been working to increase the academic rigor of instruction as we recovered from pandemic related learning losses,” said Associate Superintendent of Academic Services Malinda Cobb.
Along with overall system improvements, John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School surpassed both state and national test averages with a score of 24.3.
“We offer access to test preparation classes and personalized one-on-one tutoring support through our partnership with Varsity Tutors,” said Cobb. “These resources are designed to help students build confidence, enhance their academic skills, and ultimately succeed on important assessments like the ACT.”
Davidson and Westside Comprehensive High School both increased composite scores in their schools, and the Academy of Richmond County, Davidson and Lucy C. Laney Comprehensive High School increased their number of test takers since 2023.
In addition to tutoring services and in-school test preparation offered throughout the school year, RCSS will host a virtual Digital ACT Information night on Monday, Oct. 21, starting at 6 p.m.
During the event, ACT and school district representatives will share updates on the new format of the ACT for the 2024-25 school year and allow students and parents to ask questions.
