Richmond County Sheriff’s Deputy shot

Richmond County Sheriff’s Office officials have confirmed that a deputy has been shot.

At 3:58 p.m., a Richmond County Deputy was shot while conducting a traffic stop at Charlestown South Apartments on the 2100 block of Lumpkin Road,, according to a news release. The deputy has been transported to Augusta University Medical Center by police vehicle. His injuries are not considered life threatening, according to an email from Sgt. William McCarty.

Sources identify the deputy as John A. Tarpley who has been with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office since Dec. 1. 2018.

The deputy’s family has been notified.

A female suspect is in custody who has also been transported the the hospital for a gunshot wound which is also believed to be non life threatening, the email said

The Georgia Bureau Of Investigation is responding to the scene at the request of the Sheriff’s Office and the investigation will be turned over to them.
