Evans resident Rickey Merideth has filed a declaration of intent to run for the district three seat on the Columbia County Board of Commissioners in 2024.

The current occupant of the seat, Gary Richardson, cannot run for reelection due to term limits.

Merideth, 62, is a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and is currently the executive chef for Thrive at Augusta assisted living community and is the proud father of three children and 10 grandchildren. He and his wife Mary have been married for 40 years.

“My wife and I relocated here from Atlanta, and we fell in love with Columbia County. It just seems like the right time. I want to become more active in the community,” Merideth said.

Merideth sits on the Columbia County Animal Services Advisory Board and is a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club of Augusta. He was the Columbia County chair for Hershel Walker when the football legend ran for senate in 2022.

According to Merideth, he feels that Richardson did an excellent job on the commission and he plans to continue with policies that foster progress for a county he says is “on the move.”

“All of the residents at Thrive know me and they know that I listen whenever they have a concern and that is exactly how I will go about making decisions and representing the district,” Merideth said.

Merideth is the second person to file a DOI for the Columbia County District 3 Commission seat. He will be running against Michael Carraway.
