A Riverside Elementary School second grader was honored Friday morning after calling 911 during her mother’s medical emergency, a quick action that doctors say saved her mother’s life.
On Monday morning, Laura Norland suddenly began to feel severe chest pain, dizziness, and tingling in her arms. Her daughter, Jordyn Norland, was home with her and quickly called 911.
Laura was taken to Piedmont, where doctors confirmed she had suffered a heart attack and placed five stents during a heart catheterization.
In a Facebook post, Laura said she had no prior symptoms leading up to the heart attack and credited Jordyn’s fast action with saving her life. “Had Jordyn not called 911, I would not be here,” she wrote.
On Friday morning, Riverside Elementary recognized Jordyn at a school assembly with the “Hero in Action Award” and the Junior Officer of the Month honor. She was celebrated alongside Columbia County deputies, school staff, and classmates.
“I am home and recovering well. I am so grateful for my family,” Laura shared. “Thank God Jordyn was home with me. She called 911… because Jordyn acted so fast, she saved my life and saved my heart from sustaining any permanent damage.”
