Date: January 30, 2025

The city of Augusta will host the naming ceremony for the Augusta Riverwalk in honor of former mayor Edward M. McIntyre Friday.

The noon ceremony is open to the public and will take place at 15th Eighth St., on the Saturday Market side, according to city officials.

“As Augusta’s first African-American mayor, Ed McIntyre served as a beacon of progress and unity during his tenure. Under his leadership, the concept and development of the Augusta Riverwalk came to fruition, transforming the Savannah riverfront into a vibrant and cherished community space. This tribute recognizes his pivotal role in shaping the Riverwalk and his enduring legacy of service, dedication and visionary leadership for the city of Augusta,” a statement said.

The ceremony will include remarks from local dignitaries, members of the McIntyre family and community leaders who witnessed the transformative impact of McIntyre’s vision. City officials will unveil a commemorative plaque that highlights his contributions to Augusta’s growth and development.

The naming ceremony follows earlier events that include a 6 p.m. reception and 7 p.m. panel discussion Thursday at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History, 116 Phillips St.

Prior to the ceremony Friday, officials will lead a monument walk at 10 a.m. that begins at the gravesite of Lucy C. Laney, located at the corner of Phillips Street and Laney-Walker Boulevard.
