In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, Riverwatch Brewery is selling their specially crafted, locally concocted beer, and throwing a party like no other.
After years of studying in various brewing academies and perfecting her recipes a few decades back, owner Brey Sloan began selling her famous Irish red ale “Queen Maeve,” a dry Irish stout “Dark Druid” and a limited cask ale.
“An Irish red has got a little more of a caramel flavor to it. It’s a little sweeter, a little malty and not too strong,” she said. “It’s been a family favorite, and Queen Maeve is an Irish historical figure.”
While Sloan’s “Queen Maeve” is made with a small amount of local state honey, she said the Irish stout resembled a Guinness, and the limited cask ale will be a “dark, sweet” stout with Irish cream.
“We write all our own recipes, and Queen Maeve is not super bitter,” she said. “It’s not like an IPA that’s going to reach out and slap you across the face with bitterness; it’s in there, but it’s just enough to kind of be a counterpoint to the sweetness. It’s a pretty balanced, light beer – it hasn’t got any one defining thing.”
Sloan’s beers are also being sold at Craft and Vine as well as Arsenal Tap Room and Kitchen while supplies last.
This year she is breaking out the fan favorite beers, stickers and t-shirts just in time for the brewery’s St. Patrick’s Day party starting at 4 p.m. on March 17.
In addition to handcrafted beer, Riverwatch’s celebration will also include popular Asian cuisine food truck “Black Lotus,” special small batch releases and delicious popsicles from the Augusta Pop Company. For kids and non-alcoholic drinkers, a special housemade recipe of Green Lemon Soda will be offered.
Focusing on family-friendly fun, the party will feature entertainment such as a children’s choir at 5 p.m., live Irish music at 7 p.m., a bounce house and other backyard games for attending kids. The children’s program will include kid-friendly Irish songs like “The Unicorn Song.”
With a veteran owned, female and family operated brewery, Sloan said St. Patrick’s Day has always been an annual, happy holiday for her family.
“St. Patrick’s Day was always my favorite; family was more likely to get together on that day than even Christmas,” she said. “Everybody came for St. Patrick’s Day.”
Open Tuesday through Saturday after 4 p.m., Sloan said the St. Patrick’s Day weekend at Riverwatch Brewery is sure to be an exciting time for all in attendance.
Riverwatch Brewery is located at 1175 4th St. in downtown Augusta.
