Roaches found in local health and rehabilitation center during inspection

The health inspection world grades a score below 70 as failing, however, no restaurants, pools or hotels received a failing score from inspections on Feb. 3–7.

Worst scores in this week’s health inspection

This week’s lowest health inspection score was an 80 earned by Red Shark, located at 2574 Tobacco Road, in Hephzibah.

During the inspection, the inspector noted observing bacteria on kitchen equipment, and food particles scattered around the food preparation areas, which resulted in a total five point deduction.

“Observed mold-like substance in the ice maker,” the report stated. “Observed food debris build up on walls, floors, equipment and racks in [reach-in-cooler].”

The inspector also noted witnessing food being improperly stored within the kitchen.

“Observed uncovered food in [reach-in-cooler] and [walk-in-cooler],” the report stated. “Observed employee drinks and food in prep areas of the kitchen. Keep all employee drinks and food in designated areas.”

Following the Red Shark inspection, the second lowest score of the week was an 85 given to Bodega Ultima, located at 353 Highland Ave., in Augusta.

Throughout the inspection, the inspector also reported observing food being improperly stored in the kitchen, which resulted in a nine point reduction.

“Observed cheese, sliced tomatoes and cut Roma tomatoes above 41 degrees [Farenheit] for cold holding in prep top coolers,” the report stated.

The inspector also noticed ice build-up in the freezer and deducted one point from the facility’s score.

“Observed ice build up in the walk-in freezer,” the report stated.

The third lowest score of the week was a score of 86 given to the Windemere Health and Rehabilitation Center, located at 3618 J. Dewey Gray Circle, in Augusta.

From the inspection, the inspector deducted three points for witnessing pests in the facility.

“Observed dead and alive roaches in the ware washing room,” the report stated.

The inspector also docked four points for noticing bacteria build up in kitchen equipment.

“Observed pink and black buildup inside the bulk ice machine,” the report stated. “Clean and/or have ice machine serviced. Increase cleaning frequency to limit buildup.”

The inspector also noted seeing severe bacteria on food, and food being incorrectly stored.

“Observed mold-like growth on a container of salsa in the walk-in-cooler,” the report stated. “Observed several containers of food without labels outside the original container.”
