Painted rocks are a fun trend that a high school intern hopes will spark interest in the Columbia County Visitors Center.
“They wanted to come up with a way to bring people into the visitors’ center,” said Jordan Walton, a rising senior at Augusta Christian Schools, who is spending the summer as an intern with the Columbia County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

They’d already had a scavenger hunt, so she tried to find a new and fun way to accomplish their goal. She developed the Rocks of the Rapids campaign, which will run through July 21.

Painting rocks is easy, and people don’t have to be professionals to do it. So far, designs have been related to Independence Day or had a summer theme, but there’s no set theme people have to paint. The only restrictions are people’s own creativity, she said.
People should bring their painted rocks to the visitors’ center, the white house with the red roof at 3300 Evans To Locks Rd., between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday to be entered in a drawing for a summer gift basket and to receive goodie bags for the children. Goodie bags are available while supplies last.
Once they’ve shown off their creations at the center, they can place the rocks around the park for people to enjoy. Walton said not to forget the photos, and when placing them on social media, use #ChooseColumbiaCounty and #RocksOfTheRapids.
No rocks or paint? No problem, a painting day is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m, Wednesday, July 14, at the center.

Walton said the prize winner will be announced July 22.
Walton, whose internship is through the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, said she’s enjoyed the experience, and it’s opened her mind to other types of careers.
“I wanted to do something in health care,” she said.

Since her internship started, she’s considered other options such as exercise science and sports management.
“This was out of my element. I’ve learned a whole lot,” she said.
