A new event at Augusta Regional Airport will give runners the chance to do something they have never done before, run on one of the airport’s runways.

The Run the Runway 5K is scheduled for March 19. Lauren Smith, the airport’s assistant director of Marketing and Public Relations said she has wanted to do this since she arrived in 2011.

“And Herbert Judon, our executive director, he was actually the one that kind of was the brainchild of this event in this concept anyway, when he was out in Charlotte,” she said. “So, he, of course, got excited when he found out I wanted to do it. So, we’re here now planning in it.”

The course begins at the boat dock on Lock and Dam Road. It will wind through the park, come back out and move onto one of the airport’s runways and taxiway.

Registration fee is $30 for adults and $25 for children aged 8-12. Children seven and younger can participate free.

Proceeds from the event will go to support ForcesUnited.

Smith said, “We thought ForcesUnited doesn’t get enough recognition for what they do in the community. They are a huge asset. Of course, with Fort Gordon being in our backyard and the veterans that have called Augusta their permanent home, I think it’s important to support them in their endeavor.”

Judon echoed Smith.

“We are excited on two fronts. First, to partner with and assist a great organization like ForcesUnited. Second, to provide the community an opportunity, via a health-related event, to experience the Airport from a unique perspective.”

Runner check-in begins at 7 a.m. and the race starts at 8 a.m. Pre-registration is encouraged.
