Former Augusta Commissioner Sammie Sias has been moved from Federal Correctional Institute Williamsburg in Walters, S.C. to a reentry facility.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) website, he is located at RRM Atlanta, which is a residential reentry management (RRM) field office. Inmates are not housed at RRM Atlanta. Instead they have contracts with halfway houses throughout the state. According to a map on the FBOP site, there is a location in Augusta, and there have been reports from community members about spotting Sias in Augusta.

When asked when Sias was moved from the institution in South Carolina to RRM Atlanta, if he was at a facility in Augusta and how long he would be there, a representative from RRM Atlanta declined to comment stating they cannot provide that information to the public.

This map on the Federal Bureau of Prisons website shows that there is a reentry facility in Augusta.

As for what a residential reentry center is, according to the FBOP, they are also known as halfway houses.

“The BOP contracts with residential reentry centers (RRCs), also known as halfway houses, to provide assistance to inmates who are nearing release. RRCs provide a safe, structured, supervised environment, as well as employment counseling, job placement, financial management assistance, and other programs and services. RRCs help inmates gradually rebuild their ties to the community and facilitate supervising ex-offenders’ activities during this readjustment phase,” according to the FBOP website.

Sias, 69, is serving a 30-month sentence  for destroying records and lying to the FBI. He was found guilty in 2022 after a weeklong trial. He was sentenced in August 2023. In February 2024 his sentence was reduced by six months under new federal sentencing guidelines.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons website states the release date for Sias is May 25, 2025. The Augusta Press was unable to reach Sias for comment.
