Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) employees have received national honors for technical papers presented earlier this year at the Waste Management (WM) Symposia, an international forum for radioactive waste management and nuclear facility decommissioning.

Amanda Coleman and Peter Henry, of SRMC’s Flowsheet Development and Facility Integration group, earned the prestigious “Papers of Note” rating for their work, “The Utility of Waste Tank Historical Reviews in Bulk Waste Removal Operations at the Savannah River Site.”

Only 24 out of more than 530 papers were selected for this recognition, according to a press release from SRMC.

“‘Papers of Note’ recipients have demonstrated their superb knowledge and understanding of their subject and, therefore, deserve this distinguished recognition,” said Gary Benda, WM deputy managing director and program advisory committee chair.

Coleman and Henry’s paper also received a “Superior Paper” award, which honors authors for advancing research in radioactive waste and material management.

Two other SRMC-authored papers also achieved “Superior Paper” status, a distinction awarded to just 93 papers at the symposium.

Shelby Peterson, of the Tank Farm’s Process Engineering Facility Support group, was recognized for her paper, “Evaluating Liquid Waste Transfers and their Impacts to the SRS Tank Farms to Support Operations and Closure.”

A separate team — Joshua Goldblatt, Fred Angel, Joshua Pifer, and Thuy Le — was honored for its paper, “Creating a Salt Batch: Challenges and Lessons Learned.”

SRMC Chief Operations Officer Mike Borders credited the team’s expertise for helping advance the Department of Energy’s cleanup mission.

“We take great pride in Waste Management acknowledging these individuals for their noteworthy influence on the nuclear sector, insights that can be leveraged across other DOE sites across the complex,” Borders said.

SRMC is the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site and is comprised of BWX Technologies, Inc., Amentum, and Fluor.
