More than 70 eighth-grade girls from seven surrounding counties will gather at the Patrick Science Education Center on Saturday, Nov. 15, for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions’ (SRNS) annual “STEM Like a Girl – Introduce a Girl to Engineering and Information Technology (IT)” event.

The all-day program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the campus of the University of South Carolina Aiken and aims to ignite students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math through hands-on learning.

Nearly 55 Savannah River Site volunteers will guide participants through a series of six activities led by women in STEM fields, according to a press release from SRNS.

SRNS Education Outreach Specialist Taylor Rice said the STEM event is significant since statistics show that females are “highly underrepresented in these areas.”

“This event, which features design and electrical engineering challenges, building contests, robotics workshops, planetarium shows, and hands-on coding practice, is crafted to spark interest and inspire young minds,” said Rice.

Rice added that the event is a great way for participants to discover their potential, engage with role models, and build their confidence in the industry.
