Savannah River Site marked its 75th anniversary this year by opening its doors to employees’ families during SRS Family Days, a rare opportunity for loved ones to get a behind-the-scenes look at the site’s mission, history and daily operations.

All site-issued badged employees were invited to bring family members to the event, which was held over two weekends and featured guided and self-guided tours, interactive exhibits, historical displays and hands-on activities.

The celebration highlighted the work that has supported national security, environmental stewardship and scientific innovation at the site for more than seven decades.

“Welcoming families to the Savannah River Site for this milestone anniversary is an honor,” said Michael A. Mikolanis, manager of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Savannah River Field Office. “Our workforce is at the heart of everything we do, and sharing that commitment with their families reinforces the pride and purpose that have carried this site through 75 years of service.”

Visitors had the opportunity to view specialized equipment, speak with employees from across the site, dine at The HUB cafeteria in the 766-H Training Center and learn more about SRS’s ongoing mission.

According to Jessica Hall, 75th Anniversary Committee lead and Workforce Services and Talent Management communications advisor, Family Days marked the first such event at the site since 2000.

“Family Days is one of the most meaningful parts of our 75th anniversary celebration,” Hall said. “Our employees take great pride in the work they do, and this event gives their families the chance to experience that pride firsthand.”

The event drew close to 12,000 visitors, including 8,832 family members representing all SRS contractors.

Site leaders said the celebration focused not only on the site’s history, but also on the people who continue to carry out its mission, from long-term employees sharing memories to new hires showing their families their workplaces for the first time.

“This milestone not only reminds us why our mission matters but also who makes it possible,” said Jeff Griffin, president and CEO of Savannah River Nuclear Solutions. “Our employees and their families are the heart of SRS.”

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, a partnership between Fluor and HII, manages and operates the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site near Aiken.
