The search for a new fire chief began last month, and the city is presently accepting applications from all over the nation.
Former Fire Chief Chris James resigned in December after a contentious battle with the local fire fighters union.
The union, which does not have bargaining power, issued a scathing report on James’ leadership and pointed to the department’s 15.4 percent turnover rate as proof of low morale among the fire department staff. The union also accused James of discriminating against a gay employee, the now former EMS Chief James Kelly.
When James resigned, he received a reported $100,000 in severance.
Current fire department employees can apply for the job, but District 10 Commissioner John Clarke says he would prefer to bring in outside blood.
“In my opinion, we need someone who is new to the department and to the commission as well,” Clarke says.
All applicants must have 10 years of experience, and a master’s degree is preferred.
Applicants have until March 5 to apply by of the website www.GovHRjobs.com.
