Phil and Marsha Jones of Augusta have been selected as the winners of the 2020 Walton Award. This honor is bestowed upon an Augusta-area couple who exemplify the same qualities of community service, generosity and devotion as George and Dorothy Walton, an American Revolution-era couple from Augusta.

Phil and Marsha Jones will receive the award on Feb. 19, at a small, socially distanced reception. The honor incudes a physical award, as well as a sizeable monetary donation to a 501(c)(3) cause of the winners’ choosing. The Joneses will be donating their prize to Saint Luke United Methodist Church, located in the Harrisburg neighborhood of Augusta. The couple has served there for the last 13 years.
The Joneses were nominated by community member Shep Gallagher who knew them from attending Trinity on the Hill UMC.
“The Joneses don’t lose sight of the individual while working for the community, nor do they lose sight of the community while working for the individual,” Gallagher said. “They have an amazing ability to impact so many by helping to provide security, safety and love.”
The couple’s community efforts include helping to establish the Harrisburg Family Healthcare Clinic located at 423 Crawford Ave. They also worked alongside Augusta Locally Grown to bring the weekly Veggie Truck to Harrisburg.
The Jones family has also worked with Kids With a Future, an organization designed to provide Harrisburg-area students with the extra tutoring they need to finish high school.
The award is sponsored by AP Wealth, a tax and estate planning firm located in Augusta.
