Storm Stops Game in 2nd Inning, Will Not Be Made Up
NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: After calling a game early Tuesday due to weather and seeing last night’s contest suspended, Mother Nature continued her tirade against the GreenJackets by canceling today’s game in the 2nd inning.
Augusta began the day by finalizing last night’s suspended game, where play resumed in the bottom of the 11th. Drew Compton knocked a single to tie the game and send it to the 12th, but two runs off of Giomar Diaz in the top half sent the RiverDogs home happy for the third time in five tries.
The back half of the doubleheader started with sunshine, but storms popped up quickly despite not being in the day’s initial forecast. The ballgame was delayed with two outs in the 2nd and the RiverDogs leading, but high levels of puddling, especially in the outfield, forced the game’s cancellation. Because the two teams do not play again in the first half of the 2024 season, it is a true cancellation with no makeup date. No stats or scores from the 1.5 innings played will be recorded.
Augusta is next in action at Myrtle Beach, starting a six-game series with the Pelicans on Tuesday. Charleston heads home to host the red-hot Fredericksburg Nationals for six games. The GrenJackets next play at home a week from Tuesday, beginning the lone 12-game homestand of the season that stretches from May 14-26, as Augusta hosts the Salem Red Sox and Kannapolis Cannon Ballers in back to back weeks. The Jackets will host Charleston to begin the second half in the last week of June, and make their only trip to Charleston’s ballpark the first week of August.
