Several area teams head to their respective ‘Elite Eight’ basketball matchups

Local basketball teams are faring well so far in the basketball playoffs with multiple hoops’ squads advancing to their respective Elite Eight matchups scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

First up, the boys’ teams heading to the Elite Eight.

Butler’s boys team knocked off top-ranked Pace Academy in Atlanta Friday in a close one 60-56. The Bulldogs travel to Sandersville, Ga. to play Washington County at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Westside advanced to the Elite Eight after defeating second-ranked Columbia 82-72 at home Saturday. The Patriots will take on Early County Wednesday. The time has yet to be announced.

Grovetown will host Wheeler Tuesday after defeating Alexander 78-54 Friday on the Warriors’ home court.

Cross Creek defeated LaFayette Saturday 50-47 and will play Groves next up.

Burke County defeated Ringgold 70-53 Friday and will take on Beach.

Thomson beat Hart County 69-44 and will play Johnson next.

Evans was eliminated after losing to Carrollton 76-72.

On the ladies’ side, Cross Creek beat Murray County 52-31 Friday. The Lady Razorbacks will take on Lumpkin County.

State champion T.W. Josey defeated Banks County 41-29 Friday and will play Fannin County Tuesday.

Laney High School also advances after beating Union County 81-58. The Lady Wildcats will play Northeast, Macon. Tuesday.

Grovetown was eliminated from the playoffs after losing Friday to Rome 60-42.

Winners in the Elite Eight competition will head to the semifinals March 4-5. The finals will be in Macon March 9-12.
